Silver Cross Twin Model Doll's Pram
A coach-built double-hooded model in burgundy
A particularly attractive vintage Silver Cross twin model doll's pram, of coach-built form with opposing double hoods. The deep burgundy body is decorated with fine contrasting coach lines and scrollwork, with pleated burgundy hood coverings and a cream-lined interior. The traditional chassis is fitted with spoked wheels, pale rubber tyres, mudguards, suspension and a chromed handle with moulded grip. The unusual double-ended arrangement gives the pram a distinctive and highly decorative profile. A charming surviving example of British nursery design, suitable both for a collection of vintage dolls and as a decorative interior piece. Delivery or collection by arrangement. The Gladstone bag takes its name from William Gladstone, four times Prime Minister, and was first made by J. G. Beard at his leather shop in Westminster; its hinged frame, opening into two equal halves, was patented in 1854. By the end of the century it had become the bag of choice for doctors carrying their instruments.
Silver Cross was founded by William Wilson in Leeds in 1877, and by the mid-twentieth century was known as "the Rolls-Royce of prams", supplying the family of George VI. Its doll's prams were built in the same coach-built manner as the full-size models, in miniature. Silver Cross at the Brighton Toy Museum index
