Egyptian-Style Carved Stone Head of a Pharaoh

Egyptian-Style Carved Stone Head of a Pharaoh

An Egyptian Revival decorative sculpture

A small carved stone head representing a pharaoh in the Egyptian style, with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, softly modelled lips and a tall, stylised headdress. Worked from pale, granular stone with natural darker inclusions, the sculpture has an irregular, weathered surface and gently softened contours. The facial features are individually modelled, giving the piece an appealing sculptural character. The head draws upon the visual traditions of ancient Egyptian royal portraiture. Its precise date, geographical origin and original purpose have not been established by 1AB. The irregular profile and softly worn appearance suggest the character of an architectural or archaeological fragment, although no ancient origin is claimed. A distinctive decorative curiosity, suitable for display on a shelf, console or within a collection of sculpture and antiquities-inspired objects.

From a private collector's estate; acquired through Sarasota Estate Auction, Sarasota, Florida, USA.
