Conwy Castle
A 19th century British watercolour
A finely observed nineteenth-century British watercolour depicting Conwy Castle from the water, with sailing craft in the foreground and dramatic weather breaking across the sky. The composition places the medieval fortress prominently above the shoreline, while the movement of the sea and the strongly modelled clouds lend the scene a distinctly Romantic character. The work has previously been associated with Joseph J. Richardson and the wider Richardson landscape tradition, although that attribution has not been independently verified by 1AB. It is therefore catalogued here conservatively as British School, nineteenth century. Presented in a gilt frame with a broad cream mount.
Formerly with Lincoln Fine Art, associated with dealer Dorothy Roberts; subsequently in a private collection.
The work has historically been linked to the Richardson family tradition of British landscape painting. Thomas Miles Richardson Jnr. exhibited at the Royal Academy and painted views of Conwy Castle.
