Carved Volcanic Tuff — Cappadocian Fairy Chimneys & Rock Dwellings
Turkey, mid-twentieth century
An evocative architectural carving depicting the celebrated fairy chimneys and rock-cut dwellings of Cappadocia, central Turkey. A prominent mushroom-capped formation rises above a cluster of cave-like buildings, their façades punctuated by small recessed windows and arched openings. The pale, highly porous volcanic stone lends the composition a naturally weathered, almost archaeological appearance. A particularly appealing example of mid-twentieth-century travel memorabilia, notable for its architectural detail, sculptural character and substantial decorative scale.
Acquired during the mid-twentieth century; subsequently retained in a private family collection.
