The finely modelled features, naturalistic glass eyes and warm brown cape give the mount considerable decorative presence. The original oval wooden backboard retains the maker's stamp and an aged iron hanging bracket. The Spicer workshop was among England's distinguished taxidermy establishments, particularly celebrated for sporting trophies and natural history specimens. Combining naval imagery with a stylised mannequin, make-up, jewellery, pearls, textiles, rope, metal ornaments and found objects, the work playfully disrupts conventional ideas of gender and presentation. Created in 1992, its exploration of gender identity gives the work a particularly striking context within Broome's highly individual practice. Both sculptural and theatrical, Anchors Aweigh exemplifies the artist's transformation of collected and everyday materials into richly layered figurative constructions.",

The head is turned slightly, with a high forehead, deeply modelled brows, pronounced facial features and closely arranged hair. Worked from pale, granular stone with natural darker inclusions, the sculpture has an irregular, weathered surface and gently softened contours. The facial features are individually modelled, giving the piece an appealing sculptural character. The head draws upon the visual traditions of ancient Egyptian royal portraiture. Its precise date, geographical origin and original purpose have not been established by 1AB. The irregular profile and softly worn appearance suggest the character of an architectural or archaeological fragment, although no ancient origin is claimed. Each monk is shown kneeling in a posture of reverence, with shaven head, expressive painted features and hands extended in devotion. The figures retain extensive old polychrome decoration, with warm ochre and red robes, black-painted hair and details, and surviving traces of gilding and lacquer. Pairs of attendant disciples traditionally formed part of Burmese Buddhist shrine arrangements, positioned in relation to a central image of the Buddha. The baluster-form body is decorated in raised polychrome relief with classical figures beneath painted drapery, while the shoulders are flanked by sculptural female figures forming the handles. The pierced neck and lower sections are worked with scrolling foliate ornament and enriched throughout with extensive gilding. The domed cover is surmounted by a seated female finial, completing the theatrical and highly ornamental composition. Marked beneath with a crowned 'N' and inscribed 'Capodimonte, Italy' in gilt.",

The figure is finished in a dark matte glaze with gilt-highlighted hair and is entwined by a sculptural turquoise ribbon, while one raised hand holds a small polychrome flower. The elongated pose, simplified modelling and strong contrast of black, turquoise and gilt are characteristic of Central European decorative ceramics of the interwar period. Impressed to the reverse with the Keramia factory mark, comprising a stylised tower above 'KERAMIA', together with 'FOREIGN', and retaining its original hanging aperture. A splayed red hand is painted across bands of green, ochre and black. The edges are broken and irregular. Crowley called his bedroom La Chambre des Cauchemars, the Chamber of Nightmares, and its walls were covered with grotesque and esoteric imagery. After 1923 the murals were whitewashed. In 1955 Kenneth Anger uncovered and filmed surviving decoration. This fragment is accompanied by a personal letter from Anger to a former owner concerning the piece. It is not identified with any picture titled by Crowley. The association rests on that letter.",

"description": "A fragment of painted plaster said to be associated with the Abbey of Thelema at Cefalù, the house occupied by Aleister Crowley from 1920 until his expulsion from Italy in 1923. A red oval sits on a dark ground, with two smaller red marks above and a red form at the lower right. The edges are broken and irregular. After 1923 the Abbey's murals were whitewashed. In 1955 Kenneth Anger uncovered and filmed surviving decoration. This fragment is accompanied by a personal letter from Anger to a former owner concerning the piece. It is not identified with any picture titled by Crowley, and it is not claimed as a section still visible in published photographs of the house. The association rests on that letter.",

"comparative_notes": "Surviving painted fragments from the Abbey of Thelema are exceptionally uncommon. Much of the decoration was whitewashed after 1923 and is known chiefly from photographs, or remains in the building. The accompanying letter from Kenneth Anger gives this example its documentary interest. Since December 1990 the villa has been under a Sicilian protection order as of important artistic interest, so painted plaster still on the walls cannot lawfully be removed. That protection is context. For the villa and its protection, see Villa Santa Barbara, Abbazia di Thelema, FAI.",

"description": "Five silver tetradrachms struck for Patraos, king of the Paeonians, whose small kingdom lay north of Macedon. His reign overlapped with that of Alexander the Great, and Paeonian horsemen rode as allies in Alexander's army. Each coin bears the laureate head of Apollo to the right. On the reverse, a Paeonian cavalryman on a rearing horse spears a fallen warrior sheltering behind his shield, with the king's name, ΠΑΤΡΑΟΥ, around the edge. They are thought to have been struck at Astibos or Damastion. Found together in the Paeonian Hoard and kept together since their sale in New York in 1969, the five are offered as a group. Fine to very fine, with varied and sometimes off-centre strikes, edge splits to some flans, untoned surfaces and natural wear from circulation.",
